Tour of the archaeological and ethnological museum: itinerary and collections

During your guided tour of the Archaeological Museum of Florence you will be able to admire unique works within the various sections.

In the Etruscan section is exhibited the Chimera of Arezzo dating back to the 4th century BC. It is a bronze work with a lion’s head, a snake’s tail and a goat’s back. Within the same section is the Arringatore, a Roman work dating back to the first century. B.C. depicted with the typical Roman toga and his arm raised in the act of addressing an imaginary crowd of spectators. Added to this are beautiful sarcophagi, including that of Larthia Seianti from the second century. B.C. in polychrome terracotta, and that of the Amazons of the fourth century. B.C. in painted Greek marble.

In the Roman section, among the main works is the Idolino di Pesaro, a Roman copy of a Greek original 146cm high.

In the Greek section there is a collection of Attic ceramics from Etruscan tombs and private collections, dating back to the period between the sixth and fourth centuries. Among the most important works, the famous François Vase is on display.

In the so-called section of the Egyptian Museum, Egyptian papyri from the excavations of 11934-39 are exhibited. Objects made of wood, fabric and bone for everyday use. Here you can also find steles, portraits and grave goods.

The numismatic section contains one of the most important numismatic collections in Italy, begun with Lorenzo de’ Medici. Today it includes about 80 thousand pieces including over a thousand Etruscan coins.
